New Amsterdam: Last season has devastating twist

Warning, this article has spoilers for episode 3 of the 5th and final season of New Amsterdam.

New Amsterdam adopted a slow but sure march in this fifth and final season. It’s just that the most recent episode that aired in the US didn’t end on the kind of good note Max Goodwin always strives for.

In fact, the devastating twist on the wedding guests who were brought into the ER was so grim that while fans had previously accepted Helen Sharpe’s departure, in the end the “Sharpwin” couple was missed.

Season 5 episode 3 of New Amsterdam it was devastating

Doctors were having a stressful time trying to treat all of the wedding guests who were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at the scene, but that didn’t come as a surprise to ER.

Most of the injured guests looked more or less well. And more or less normal.

The two biggest problems, however, were that the groom had an extremely rare blood type and would die without an infusion. And a little girl, who was at the wedding, was catatonic after all that she had witnessed.

While Max and Dr. Wilder were heading to Bermuda to retrieve a donor who could return to New York and donate blood in person (without the blood being seized by customs), Iggy did what he could with young Lily. Including telling the story of the florist at her wedding.

Now, being New Amsterdam — aka the medical drama with a knack for finding a bright side in even the darkest stories — the series indicated that Max and Wilder would be able to save the groom. And that Lily would recover in time to carry flowers down whatever hallway they could at the hospital.

The shocking twist!

New Amsterdam

But that wasn’t it. Lily wasn’t the flower girl, but the bride. It was a child marriage, and the fire was actually a smoke bomb from her 15-year-old brother, who was trying to save her. The doctors were all shocked that the people who looked like perfectly normal wedding guests who were in a crisis were actually people who supported a marriage between an adult man and a girl. But no arrests could be made.

Lily’s mother got a legal marriage license in West Virginia and no federal laws were being broken with the marriage. All the doctors were on the verge of tears after receiving the news that no one would get a punishment, and the closest the story got to a cathartic ending was Iggy visiting Martin and just asking to see the kids. And Max going home with Luna and suggesting he sleep next to her bed that night.

Why do we miss Sharpwin?

On the surface, this episode didn’t really touch Max’s bitter taste after losing Helen. In fact, he continued to build the bond between Max and Wilder. Unlike the Season 5 premiere, no devastation had anything to do with the ending of the “Sharpwin” love story. But fans found themselves remembering that some of the happiest parts of last season came from when they were on dry land together. and it looked like New Amsterdam really needed solid ground at the end of this episode.

Max really could have used some company at home to accompany Luna, which could have been a comfort to her father. His conversation with Wilder seemed to give both of them some comfort, and she was clearly someone to lean on. Anyway, the episode was pretty devastating, and this is where we saw how much Helen is missing from the plot.

New Amsterdam continues with airings of the final season in the United States every Tuesday on NBC.
