The main screenwriter of Grey’s Anatomy, Krista Vernoff discussed the possibility of Derek Shepherd’s return to the medical drama. All this, after the latest twist that the season 19 US premiere presented.
Derek Shepherd, Patrick Dempsey’s character, appeared in the series in the pilot (after his night with Meredith) as the new assistant and head of neurosurgery at Seattle Grace Hospital. The inmates, including Meredith, eventually nicknamed him ‘McDreamy’ due to his good looks and charisma. Although Derek began the series in a rocky marriage with Addison (Kate Walsh), his relationship with Meredith turned out to be one of the most important aspects of the show. Grey’s Anatomy.
Derek’s death defined a new series of moment
As the main couple Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Derek have been through many turbulent times, as a popular medical drama centered on beloved characters. The beginning of the duo’s relationship was marked by Derek’s marriage and the disapproval of some co-workers, as well as their professional positions. Since Derek was technically Meredith’s boss.
Later, the duo overcame these obstacles, got married, and even started a family. But during Season 11, Dempsey was ready to let go. Grey’s Anatomy, leading the showrunners at the time to deal with the character’s departure in an intense way: they killed him. As a result, Meredith lost her husband when Derek was in a car accident and could not be saved.
Derek is back in the spotlight in season 19
Although the character returned in Season 17, in a series of Meredith Grey’s dream sequences, Derek never appeared on the series again. Only now, one of the series’ new interns, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), has an unexpected revelation: he’s Derek and Amelia Shepherd’s nephew. Which made Derek back to being a big fan attention.
Speaking to Deadline, Vernoff suggests that if possible, the series would welcome Dempsey back, possibly in a flashback.
Referencing Dempsey’s comments at the D23 Expo that he would be open to returning if the creators decided to somehow bring the character back, Vernoff states that “there were no conversations about it” still. Though, comments from him indicate that the door is open.
“I would never say never. I will say this. There have been no conversations about it at this point, yet. But that’s it: never say never.
It would be interesting to see Derek in a flashback sequence, just in case. Grey’s Anatomy decide to tell the origin story of Dr. Adams. Apparently, Patrick Dempsey would be able to return to that moment.
Derek remains one of the most important characters in Grey’s Anatomy
Vernoff’s comments offer some hope to fans of Grey’s Anatomy wanting to see Dempsey play Derek one more time. The character’s death had a huge impact on the series, leaving fans of the series, as well as the characters he left behind, utterly devastated.
Some fans of the series have even postulated theories that Derek never died due to the shocking nature of his departure. Although it is unlikely that Grey’s Anatomy has faked the character’s death due to the long precedent of character mortality, his death did not spell the end of Dempsey’s appearances.
As stated, in Season 17, Dempsey reprized his role as Derek, appearing in one of Meredith’s dreams while battling Covid.
It’s also worth noting that Kate Walsh, who played Derek’s first wife and mourned his death with Meredith, will have a bigger role in Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy. Based on these two characters’ connections to Derek, as well as his sister Amelia’s (Caterina Scorsone) continued involvement in the series, the possibility of Dempsey’s return in flashbacks seems more appropriate than ever.
As Derek’s influence on Lucas clearly drove the young intern’s career ambitions, flashbacks of him would offer a deeper understanding of the couple’s relationship and, as a result, Lucas’ motivations.
If audiences catch a glimpse of Dempsey in season 19 of Grey’s Anatomyit is promising that both Vernoff and Dempsey will be able to make this work.
In the United States, Grey’s Anatomy continues its 19th season every Thursday on ABC. In Brazil, there is no release date yet.
